Lenten Cross Project for Kids

When I first started teaching in the wonderful Catholic School in which I teach, I had one of those awesome parents who was always there when I needed an extra hand and always had a smile on her face when she was in the classroom. During the time that she was with me, she shared this sweet Lenten cross project that I do every year. I think of her every time I get the materials out- what a sweet memory!




This project is easy and if you are looking for a striking bulletin board, this fills that need! (Click the picture above to get a Google doc of the project!)

The first thing I do is teach my students the meaning of the colors:
BLACK - We all sin.
RED - Jesus died.
WHITE - Jesus wiped our sins away.
GREEN - Jesus gives us new life.
YELLOW - We have new life in Heaven with Jesus.

To do the project,  children trace the cross onto purple construction paper and glue onto a half sheet of black construction paper. Children cut small pieces of black, red, white, green, and yellow construction paper and glue onto the cross in a mosaic pattern. Glue the words onto the other side of the black paper. Voila! An easy craft with a BIG meaning!

When my students finish their crosses, they make a fun Lenten bracelet using the Lenten colors.

Lenten Good Deeds Chart

The Lenten season is a wonderful opportunity to encourage extra kindness in the classroom. Sacrifice is a big concept for my kinders, but they ALL understand the importance of being kind and sharing Jesus' love. We do Good Deeds in my classroom during the Lenten season. I created this Stained Glass Good Deeds chart for my students. Each time a child does a Good Deed, he or she colors a space on their personal chart. By the time Easter arrives, the chart is filled with an array of colors representing many wonderful acts of kindness.

Free Stations of the Cross for Young Children

Prayer is an essential ingredient for spiritual growth during 

the Season of Lent.

While the Stations of the Cross is a very powerful form of prayer,

 it can be emotionally intense for tender hearts 

and a long time to stay still and quiet for those wiggly little ones.  

Therefore, I created my own modified Stations of the Cross, 

which we pray in our classroom using a Projector and Powerpoint presentation.  

Later, during Lent I take my students to Church where we walk and pray the Station as a class.

Memory Verse Work

Happy Saturday!  My first grade son has been busy this month learning a memory verse and the books of the New Testament.  For school (he attends a Christian school) and AWANA's Club, he had two assignments that he was struggling a bit with memorizing.

For school, he has to memorize Psalm 96:1-4 for a memory verse competition at the end of the month.  I made a mini-poster of the verse, strips for him to put the verse in order, a visualizing sheet, and a stationery sheet for him to copy the verse. Once he puts the strips in correct sequence, then I take out a strip one by one to help scaffold his learning and memorization.

 

For AWANA's club, he was to memorize the books of the New testament.  I created a color-coded activity for him. He cut the strips apart and then practiced putting them in the correct order.

Ash Wednesday Craft

Scripture Posters for Valentine's Day

 With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I made a set of three posters with Bible verses about love. I'm all about sending Valentines, giving gifts, and of course the chocolate (lots of chocolate!), but foremost is making sure my little ones know that with God's love, every day is Valentine's Day!
